There are two main printing methods - digital (such as a laser) and offset press - for most desktop published documents. Which one you use is usually determined by paper size and weight, type of colour, budget and number of copies.

Paper
Laser printers are usually used for paper in the lighter end of the range such as typical copy paper weight (80 gsm where I live) up to about 200 gsm. Offset printing can cope with much heavier paper weights, such as used for business cards or presentation folders. Most lasers printers can only work with standard size papers such as A4 or A3, although some of the highly specialised wide format printers can print on very large size paper.

Colour
Laser printers can usually print only the standard process colours - cyan magenta yellow and black (CMYK). If you want a specific Pantone colour, you must use an offset press.

Quantity/Cost
Where I live, if you want less than a few hundred copies (printed on standard weight and size paper in CMYK), then digital is probably the way to go. But if you wanted to print several thousand, then offset would work out much cheaper per sheet.

I've just seen that you originally posted this more than 2 years ago!! Hope you managed to get some answers before this. But I will leave it in case anyone else wants to know.

You can find a lot of answers on "How To Print" inside the internet. You can read it there or you may print it. You actually use a different command to print depending on which spooling software you use.
